Green Gang: Fossil Hunt at the Folkestone Warren

Event Date: 28/05/2024 10:00 - 11:30

Join Ranger Nathan for a walk down to the beach at Folkestone Warren to look for fossils that have been exposed from the gault clay by the sea. We will hopefully find some ammonite, belemnite and bivalve fossils and maybe even a fossilised shark tooth or crab.

Free on street parking at Hasborough Road and Varne Road, if available. Or paid parking at Pavilion Car Park.

Meeting: On Wear Bay Rd, near the playground and sports centre.

Toilets in recreation ground.

Please wear appropriate footwear for the beach, steep slopes and steps.

Children must be accompanied at all times. Due to limited spaces we appreciate only one adult accompanying each child during the event. Please note each ticket booked is for one child plus one accompanying adult.

We have three donation ticket options available and all money raised will go back into our conservation work across sites as well as ensuring the continuation of our events. All three ticket options are identical in everything except price and once 15 in total have sold the event will be full.

Event Location - Folkestone Warren

Folkestone Warren is a fascinating area of cliff, coast, woodland and grassland formed by a series of landslips. The beach is one of the best places in Britain to find fossils, particularly those of ammonites, and the rockpools can be explored at low tide.

To the north of the railway line and directly beneath the chalk cliffs is the hart’s-tongue wood, an area of humid and undisturbed woodland covered in the glossy-green fronds of hart’s tongue fern. To the south of the railway line is an area of chalk grassland where cattle grazing has been re-established.

The North Downs Way runs along the top of the cliffs and links the site to Folkestone Downs to the west and Samphire Hoe to the east.

The Warren is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Local Nature Reserve and is managed on behalf of Folkestone and Hythe District Council and Network Rail.
