Ponds for wildlife

We are working in partnership with Natural England to create and restore ponds for the great crested newt. The great crested newt is the largest of the UK’s newt species and is easily recognisable by its bright lollipop orange underneath, shaggy crest and large tail.

Although widespread, great crested newts are in steady decline through the loss of suitable ponds, which they require to breed. Natural England’s District Level Licensing Scheme aims to create or restore suitable ponds in specific areas across Kent.

The scheme provides funding for people to create or restore a pond on their land, which we would oversee and deliver. A pond funded through the scheme needs to be a minimum of 150m2, be unlined, at least 1.5m deep and free of fish.

If you live in the Dover or Folkestone and Hythe districts and are interested in our help to restore an old pond or create a new one to support the great crested newt, please email RMCP@dover.gov.uk and we will be in touch to discuss.
