Spinney Wood in Aylesham

Spinney Wood is an important and very old wildlife site.  It is one of the fragments of ancient woodland remaining in Kent.

Today, it is protected by a Tree Preservation Order, so that any tree-cutting work must be agreed to by the Forestry Commission.  After some years without management, the woodland is now being revived, using traditional methods of work.

Looking After Spinney Wood

Aylesham Parish Council lease the site from Dover District Council, and manage it for local people and the woodland wildlife.  There is a support group for the wood, and a site management plan.  There is also a local Tree Warden.

You can help Spinney Wood by joining in with the nature conservation work at the wood, becoming a Spinney Wood Voluntary Warden, watching the wildlife, and keeping an eye out in case of possible problems.

There will be conservation events coming up at Spinney Wood where coppicing work will take place in this popular woodland.  This benefits the fantastic flora this wood supports and cuts stakes and binders for hedge laying.  In addition, the WCCP will be looking for signs of dormice.
